Percentage of out-of-hospital births, by place of delivery: United States, 1990 and 2006


Among out-of-hospital births in 2006, nearly two-thirds (64.7%) occurred at home, 28.0% in a freestanding birthing center, 1.1% in a clinic or doctor’s office, and 6.2% elsewhere.

From 1990 to 2006, the proportion of out-of-hospital births that were home births increased from 59.0% to 64.7%, while the proportion of birthing center births declined slightly from 31.4% to 28.0%.

The proportion that occurred in a clinic or doctor’s office declined from 2.4% in 1990 to 1.1% in 2006.
