Measurement of Deviations of the Spine with Scoliometry

Scoliometry

  • using a Pedi-Scoliometer (Pedihealth Oy, Oulu, Finland) to measure spine deviation.
  • In structural scoliosis an asymmetry of the two halves of the back is seen.

Moiré topography

  • Spinal deviations were previously measured using Moiré topography.
  • Moiré topography is a biosteriometric method producing a three-dimensional image of the shape of the trunk.

Cobb angle

  • named after the American orthopedic surgeon John Robert Cobb (1903 - 1967).
John Robert Cobb (1903–1967), was an American orthopedic surgeon who inventing the Cobb angle, the preferred method of measuring the degree of scoliosis and post-traumatic kyphosis.
  • originally used to measure coronal plane deformity on antero-posterior plain radiographs in the classification of scoliosis.
  • been adapted to classify sagittal plane deformity.
  • for the setting of traumatic thoracolumbar spine fractures.
  • angle formed between a line drawn parallel to the superior endplate of one vertebra above the fracture and a line drawn parallel to the inferior endplate of the vertebra one level below the fracture.
