Hypothalamus Histology - Paraventricular and Suprachiasmatic Nuclei
- monkey hypothalamus (cross-section) either side of the 3rd ventricle.
Paraventricular Nucleus (PVN, PVA, or PVH)
- lies beside the third ventricle.
- highly vascularised.
- neuroendocrine neurons extend into the median eminence and then into the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis).
- release oxytocin or vasopressin.
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN)
- lies directly above the optic chasm.
- involved in the control of circadian rhythms.
- cells contain vasopressin, vasoactive intestinal peptide and neurotransmitters.
