Uterus Histology - Secretory Phase

  • uterine endometrium (day 15 - 22)
  • Increasing progesterone levels from the corpus luteum increase secretion from the glands.
  • Uterine glands become dilated by secretion of carbohydrate-rich secretions (eg mucin) and cells accumulate glycogen.
  • The endometrium becomes thicker, partly due to the increased fluid (oedema) in the stroma.

Menstrual Cycle - Histology (images are listed in sequence and uterine endometrium from dilatation and curettage)

Uterine Endometrium: menstrual | mid-proliferative | late proliferative | secretory | late secretory
Vaginal Smear: early proliferative | mid-proliferative | late proliferative | secretory | late secretory
